Our client is a market-leading logistics specialist serving the defence and government sectors, providing secure, mission-critical transport solutions by road, air, and ocean freight. Operating across the UK, Europe, and beyond, they deliver reliability, trust, and precision in a fast-paced, purpose-driven environment.

They are now seeking a Compliance Officer to strengthen their compliance function, safeguard operational integrity, and support continuous improvement across the business. Reporting directly to the Head of Compliance, this role offers genuine autonomy, variety, and the opportunity to help shape future standards and accreditations.

The Opportunity

As Compliance Officer, you will take ownership of day-to-day compliance activity - from policy management and risk assessment to audit delivery and accreditation readiness. You'll be instrumental in maintaining high standards, ensuring regulatory alignment, and preparing the business for future certifications, including ISO 27001, Defence Cyber Certification, and Cyber Essentials Plus.

Key Responsibilities

Policy, SOPs, and Document Control

  • Maintain and enhance the central policy and SOP library, ensuring documentation is accurate, current, and accessible.
  • Deliver SOP briefings and maintain confirmation records.
  • Manage digital insurance and vehicle documentation.
  • Ensure compliance communications and training records are audit-ready.

Risk Management and Business Continuity

  • Lead driver, vehicle, facility, and cyber risk assessments.
  • Maintain an active risk register and dashboard.
  • Review and update the business continuity plan; deliver readiness exercises.
  • Operate near-miss and breach escalation processes and support investigations.
  • Track Health & Safety duties, first aid coverage, alarms, and regulatory updates.

Accreditations, Audit, and Assurance

  • Deliver internal audit programmes for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
  • Monitor vehicle inspection and maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct driver timesheet spot checks under the Working Time Directive.
  • Support the 12-month compliance plan and maintain accreditation evidence packs.
  • Lead the journey to achieve ISO 27001, Defence Cyber Certification, and Cyber Essentials Plus by H1 2027.
  • Support MoD-related standards such as FSC and IPSA.

Customer, Supplier, and Third-Party Compliance

  • Manage supplier and third-party questionnaires, tracking responses and remediation.
  • Maintain up-to-date customer compliance registers (insurance, bank details, security clearances).
  • Ensure a robust evidence trail for customer and regulatory assurance.

Training, Governance, and Digital Tools

  • Conduct training needs analyses and manage the training matrix and expiry tracker.
  • Utilise Office 365, SharePoint, and Teams to enhance process efficiency.
  • Contribute to monthly compliance reports and legislative updates for senior leaders.

Experience and Qualifications

Compliance, Audit, and Standards

  • Proven compliance experience within logistics, transport, defence, or a similarly regulated environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 with hands-on audit experience.
  • Familiarity or willingness to develop expertise in ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus, and Defence Cyber Certification.

Risk, Security, and Regulation

  • Skilled in risk assessment across people, vehicles, facilities, and/or cyber domains.
  • Understanding of the Working Time Directive and National Minimum Wage (advantageous).
  • Awareness of Aviation Security for freight operations (preferred).
  • Knowledge of data protection and handling Official Sensitive information (preferred).

Digital Competence

  • Proficient in SharePoint and Teams for document control and evidence management.
  • Advanced Excel skills for dashboards, trackers, and data insights.

Communication and Stakeholder Management

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Confident engaging with senior leaders and influencing cross-functional teams.
  • Highly organised, detail-driven, and capable of managing competing priorities.

Formal Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites.
  • Must be a British citizen or dual UK national (due to security clearance requirements).
  • Role subject to SC clearance and nationality/right-to-work restrictions.
