Senior Electrical Design & Software Design Engineer

Location: Bristol (Hybrid / Site-Based)

Overview

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading engineering and manufacturing client within the packaging and industrial automation sector. Due to continued growth, our client is seeking a Senior Electrical Design & Software Design Engineer with strong PLC and control systems expertise.

This role offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-speed machinery projects from concept through to commissioning, with scope to lead technical aspects of multi-disciplinary engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical design of automated machinery control systems
  • PLC software development using Rockwell (Allen-Bradley) and Beckhoff (TwinCAT)
  • Control system safety analysis using Sistema
  • Ensure compliance with CE marking, NEC, CSA, and UL standards
  • In-house commissioning and occasional on-site commissioning (UK & overseas)
  • Collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams
  • Technical leadership on projects involving multiple engineering disciplines
  • Evaluation and implementation of new automation and control technologies
  • Continuous improvement of machine performance, reliability, and safety

Skills & Experience Required

  • HND or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related discipline
  • Strong experience in electrical design and PLC software development
  • Hands-on experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLCs
  • Hands-on experience with Beckhoff / TwinCAT PLC systems
  • Background in packaging machinery, automation, or special-purpose machinery
  • Knowledge of functional safety, risk assessment, and Sistema
  • Understanding of CE, UL, CSA, and NEC compliance
  • Ability to work independently and lead technical elements of projects
  • Strong fault-finding, problem-solving, and commissioning capability
  • Excellent communication skills and customer-facing experience
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (UK & international)
