A Primary School in the BS32 area is looking for a SEMH learning support assistant to start as soon as possible.

An SEMH teaching role supports students with social, emotional, and mental health needs by creating a safe, nurturing environment and using tailored strategies to help them manage behaviour, build resilience, and engage in learning. It involves close collaboration with families and professionals to provide consistent, holistic support.

The ideal SEMH teaching assistant needs to be clear, concise, resilient, confident and adept at active listening. Building trust through open communication allows students to feel safe expressing themselves. Empathy is a skill that is at the core of all SEMH practices. You will need to have clear and supportive communication with both students and staff.

You will be required to work full-time until the end of the academic year with a high potential to continue into September.

You will be expected to:

  • Empathetic and compassion - Understand and relate to the emotional needs of students.

  • Patient - Able to remain calm and composed, especially during challenging behaviours.

  • Strong communication skills - Clear and supportive communication with both students and staff.

  • Consistency and reliability - Builds trust through predictable and stable behaviour.

  • Adaptability - Can respond to changing situations and individual needs flexibly.

  • Knowledge of SEMH needs - Understands common mental health issues and behavioural difficulties.

  • Positive behaviour management - Uses de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches.

  • Team player - Works closely with teachers, support staff, and external agencies.
