Job Responsibilities

  • Carry out Preventative Maintenance Inspections on vehicles and equipment within the fleet.

  • Service vehicles and machinery, perform fault diagnosis, and prepare for MOT.

  • Replace parts as necessary and support the Fleet Operations Supervisor in delivering a high-functioning, customer-focused maintenance service.

  • Provide an 'out of hours' service during the winter period and bank holidays to assist other service areas across the Council as required.

  • Maintain the Council's fleet of around 150 vehicles to ensure compliance with legal requirements, the Council’s Operator’s licence, and DVSA standards.

  • Log and record work activities, labor charges, order parts, and monitor stock on the digital database to maximize service income.

  • Promote understanding and use of preventative maintenance to minimize vehicle downtime and disruption to service users.

  • Complete and maintain accurate documentation using the online Fleet Management system.

  • Undertake vehicle diagnosis using specialist IT equipment, identify faults, and order necessary parts.

  • Create and maintain effective working relationships with all Highways, Transport & Recycling staff and stakeholders.

  • Provide data and analysis to ensure consistency of proactive maintenance practices across workshop sites.

  • Stay updated on changes in vehicle maintenance legislation and regulations.

  • Develop and apply Health & Safety processes and procedures in the Vehicle Maintenance Workshops.

  • Maintain a “Safe, Clean & Tidy” workshop environment.

  • Attend relevant training programs and mentor apprentices or career-graded positions.

Person Specification

  • Experience:

    • Experience in heavy vehicle or heavy plant maintenance.

    • Experience in vehicle inspection to meet DVSA standards.

  • Knowledge:

    • Knowledge of Health and Safety.

    • Mechanical knowledge of a broad range of vehicles, machinery, equipment, and tools.

    • Knowledge of diagnostic equipment.

  • Qualifications and Training:

    • Accredited nationally recognized qualification in the repair and maintenance of vehicles or heavy plant to QCF level 3 or equivalent.

    • Possess a full current valid Category B driving license.

    • Possess a full current Category C driving license or the capability to attain one within 2 years after the probationary period.

    • Commitment to undergo any future training required for the role.

  • Personal Qualities:

    • Good interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to work as part of a team.

    • Commitment to providing a quality repair service and excellent customer service.

  • Skills:

    • Able to work efficiently under pressure and meet deadlines.

    • Good personal organizational skills.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Ability to work variable working patterns as required by the service needs.

    • Ability to carry out tasks during out of hours as per the stand-by and call-out rota.

    • Possess a full driving license and have the ability to travel around the County.
