HGV Technician

Contract Duration: 3+ Months
Working Hours: Mon – Fri, 09:00 – 17:00, 37 Hours per week
Pay Rate: £14.63 per hour

Job Responsibilities
-
Carry out Preventative Maintenance Inspections on vehicles and equipment within the fleet.

Service vehicles and machinery, perform fault diagnosis, and prepare for MOT.

Replace parts as necessary and support the Fleet Operations Supervisor in delivering a high-functioning, customer-focused maintenance service.

Provide an 'out of hours' service during the winter period and bank holidays to assist other service areas across the Council as required.

Maintain the Council's fleet of around 150 vehicles to ensure compliance with legal requirements, the Council’s Operator’s licence, and DVSA standards.

Log and record work activities, labor charges, order parts, and monitor stock on the digital database to maximize service income.

Promote understanding and use of preventative maintenance to minimize vehicle downtime and disruption to service users.

Complete and maintain accurate documentation using the online Fleet Management system.

Undertake vehicle diagnosis using specialist IT equipment, identify faults, and order necessary parts.

Create and maintain effective working relationships with all Highways, Transport & Recycling staff and stakeholders.

Provide data and analysis to ensure consistency of proactive maintenance practices across workshop sites.

Stay updated on changes in vehicle maintenance legislation and regulations.

Develop and apply Health & Safety processes and procedures in the Vehicle Maintenance Workshops.

Maintain a “Safe, Clean & Tidy” workshop environment.

Attend relevant training programs and mentor apprentices or career-graded positions.
Person Specification
-
Experience:
-
Experience in heavy vehicle or heavy plant maintenance.
-
Experience in vehicle inspection to meet DVSA standards.
-

Knowledge:
-
Knowledge of Health and Safety.
-
Mechanical knowledge of a broad range of vehicles, machinery, equipment, and tools.
-
Knowledge of diagnostic equipment.
-

Qualifications and Training:
-
Accredited nationally recognized qualification in the repair and maintenance of vehicles or heavy plant to QCF level 3 or equivalent.

Possess a full current valid Category B driving license.
-
Possess a full current Category C driving license or the capability to attain one within 2 years after the probationary period.
-
Commitment to undergo any future training required for the role.
