Controls and Automation Engineer
Salary: £50K - £60K
Location: Cambridge

An exciting opportunity has come up for a Controls/Automation Engineer to join a forward-thinking and fast-growing engineering firm at the forefront of automated palletising technology. The company specialises in a wide range of automation solutions, from end-of-line palletising systems to robotic pallet handlers and automated container unloading, powered by patented software and premium components.

This role offers the chance to be directly involved in the development and commissioning of high-performance automation systems used across diverse industrial environments. Youll work both on-site and in-house, contributing to projects that span the UK. The company prides itself on delivering exceptional service and tailored solutions, with a team that takes the time to understand and meet each customers unique needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement automation software, primarily using PLCs and structured text
  • Install and commission automated systems on customer sites (approx. 60% travel)
  • Integrate software and hardware components for custom automation solutions
  • Provide on-site and remote technical support to engineers and clients
  • Deliver training sessions to customers on system use and functionality
  • Support continuous improvement of systems and internal commissioning processes

Skills & Experience Required:

  • PLC programming Experience (Beckhoff, Siemens)
  • Experience with IEC-61131-3 languages (Structured Text desired)
  • Good experience with robot programming (KUKA or similar platforms)
  • Experience commissioning automated machinery
  • Good mechanical and electrical aptitude
  • Willingness to travel across the UK and stay away from home when required (expenses + overnight allowance)
  • App development skills in C++ or C# are beneficial but not essential

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Electrical training or qualifications (desirable)
  • Experience in creating electrical designs for automated machinery (desirable)
