Main Purpose of the Role

To provide flexible, person-centred support to service users with autism spectrum disorder and/or learning disabilities within a residential care setting.
The Care Worker will assist individuals with their daily living activities, personal development, and community engagement, promoting dignity, independence, and wellbeing at all times.

Key Responsibilities

 Support & Personal Care

Support service users in all aspects of daily living including eating, drinking, personal hygiene, dressing, and mobility.

Encourage individuals to achieve as much independence as possible while maintaining safety and wellbeing.

Promote equality, dignity, and respect in every aspect of care delivery.

Maintain confidentiality at all times and handle personal information appropriately.

Daily Living & Activities

Encourage participation in educational, vocational, leisure, and therapeutic activities within the home and community.

Support service users with their basic living needs (food, hygiene, sleep, shelter, clothing).

Promote opportunities for community integration and social inclusion.

Sleep-in & Shift Duties

Undertake sleep-in duties (22:00–08:30) as required.

Remain on-site and available in case of emergencies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents.

Respond promptly and appropriately to any incidents or care needs during the night.

Environment & Safety

Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable living environment in accordance with infection control guidelines.

Follow all Health and Safety and Fire Safety procedures.

Report hazards, defects, or potential risks immediately to the Home Manager.

Communication & Record Keeping

Keep accurate, up-to-date care records in line with the home’s policies and legal requirements.

Report changes in residents’ needs, conditions, or wellbeing promptly to senior staff.

Maintain professional communication with colleagues, families, and external agencies.

Teamwork & Development

Work collaboratively with all staff to provide a consistent, high-quality standard of care.

Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and mandatory training as required.

Support and promote the values and ethos of the Care Home.

General Responsibilities

Maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of residents’ care and the operation of the home.

Ensure behaviour and conduct inside and outside of work reflects the professional values of the Care Home.

Adhere to company policies including Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, and Health & Safety.

Participate in performance reviews and ongoing professional development.

Undertake any other duties within the scope and spirit of the role as requested by the Home Manager.

Person Specification

Essential:

Genuine interest in working with people with autism and learning disabilities.

Compassionate, patient, and reliable.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and dignity of service users.

Desirable:

Previous experience in a care or support role.

NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards).

Knowledge of infection control, safeguarding, and confidentiality procedures.

DBS Certificate is advantageous, but can be provided
