Are you an experienced laboratory chemist with a strong understanding of hazardous waste and analytical testing? Do you enjoy working in a hands-on laboratory environment where accuracy, safety, and compliance are critical? If so, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.

A leading hazardous waste management organisation is seeking a Laboratory Chemist to support operations at its facility in Essex. This role is central to the effective running of the hazardous waste laboratory, supporting waste acceptance, classification, and pricing through high-quality analytical testing and technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Logging, coordinating, and tracking all samples.

  • Performing laboratory analysis using a range of equipment, including XRF, FTIR, photometry, closed cup flash point, and bomb calorimetry.

  • Maintaining laboratory equipment to a high standard and ensuring it is fit for purpose.

  • Testing unknown wastes to support classification, acceptance, and pricing decisions.

  • Interpreting laboratory results to accurately classify waste and assign appropriate EWC codes and ADR labels


What you will need:

  • Degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline (essential).

  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment using analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRF, photometry, or calorimetry.

  • Experience within the hazardous waste or environmental sector (highly desirable).

  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.

  • Good understanding of health, safety, and environmental compliance.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an operational team.
