Head Gardener - Private Estate, Chelmsford (Essex)

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (4:00pm in winter)Full-time, Permanent

Are you an experienced horticulturist with a passion for exceptional gardens? A prestigious private estate in Chelmsford is seeking a Head Gardener to take the lead in maintaining and developing a renowned classical Plantsman's Garden.

This is a rare opportunity to shape and nurture a diverse and established garden, working closely with the estate owners and managing a small, dedicated team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the day-to-day management and long-term planning of the estate's gardens and grounds
  • Supervise and mentor a small gardening team, including a part-time gardener
  • Maintain and enhance a wide variety of plant collections, including exotic and rare species
  • Develop seasonal planting schemes and ensure year-round interest and structure
  • Operate and maintain garden machinery and tools to a high standard
  • Liaise with the estate owners to align garden development with their vision
  • Ensure best practices in sustainability, plant health, and pest management
Requirements:
  • Extensive horticultural knowledge and hands-on experience in high-end private or heritage gardens
  • Formal horticultural qualifications (minimum RHS Level 2 or equivalent)
  • PA1/PA6 pesticide certificates (or willingness to obtain)
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • A keen eye for design, detail, and plant health
  • Full UK driving licence
