Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Head Chef in planning and preparing meals for residents, ensuring that their individual dietary needs and preferences are met

  • Managing food preparation and cooking processes, maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene

  • Assisting with menu planning, portion control, and stock management

  • Providing leadership and direction to kitchen staff in the absence of the Head Chef

  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant health, safety, and hygiene regulations

  • Creating a warm and pleasant mealtime environment for residents, ensuring that food is served in an appealing and enjoyable way

  • Assisting with the training and development of junior kitchen staff

  • Handling any kitchen-related queries from residents or staff

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in a professional kitchen environment, ideally in a care home or similar setting

  • Knowledge of dietary needs and nutrition for the elderly or those with specific dietary requirements (e.g., allergies, soft diets, diabetes)

  • Strong understanding of food hygiene and health & safety standards

  • Ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively with residents and staff

  • A passion for cooking and providing high-quality food in a care environment

  • Ability to work flexibly, including weekends and holidays as required

Desirable:

  • Experience of managing or supervising kitchen staff

  • Knowledge of specific dietary restrictions for elderly care, such as dysphagia or texture-modified diets

  • DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
