Specialist Teaching Assistant – Primary School

Vision for Education is seeking a Specialist Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Colchester. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of pupils who need extra support to succeed — both academically and emotionally.

About the Role

As a Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Work closely with class teachers and the SENCO to support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

  • Provide 1:1 or small group support, focusing on areas such as social communication, emotional regulation, literacy, or numeracy.

  • Help create and implement individual learning plans (IEPs) and monitor progress closely.

  • Support inclusion and engagement within the classroom and wider school community.

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with children to encourage confidence and independence.

This role would suit someone with previous experience in SEN, learning support, or behaviour mentoring, who has a calm, patient, and nurturing approach.

‍ About You

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate about working with children and making a positive impact.

  • Experienced in supporting pupils with additional needs such as ASD, ADHD, SEMH, or speech and language difficulties.

  • Able to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals.

  • Patient, empathetic, and adaptable to different learning styles.

  • Ideally holds a relevant Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (although experience will also be considered).
