Project Manager

Location: Crawley and London

Duration: 12 Months (potential for extension)

Pay Rate: from 400.00 per day PAYE

The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and accomplished Project Manager to lead a key rolling stock fleet programme. This is a critical role that requires a professional with a proven track record of managing complex projects from inception to completion within the UK rail sector. You will be responsible for the full project lifecycle, ensuring the fleet is managed safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

This position demands a dynamic leader who can manage diverse teams, mitigate risks, and effectively communicate with all stakeholders, including internal departments, suppliers, and the customer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership & Management: Take full ownership of the redelivery project, developing a comprehensive project plan, defining the scope, and establishing a clear delivery strategy.
  • Fleet Redelivery Oversight: Oversee successful delivery of the project on behalf of a large rail organization, throughout the private-to-public owned operator transition. You will also govern the delivery of all aspects of the programme works, maintaining quality in line with vehicle maintenance requirements.
  • Stakeholder Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for the client and key stakeholders. You'll need to build strong relationships, manage expectations, and provide regular, transparent progress reports.
  • Financial & Resource Control: Accurately forecast, track, and manage the project budget, ensuring cost efficiency. You will also develop processes to establish efficient costing of all open work on a frequent basis to all key stakeholders.
  • Quality & Defect Management: Ensure defects are accurately raised, coded, and reported to adhere to train service agreement deliverables. You'll also be responsible for maintaining quality in line with vehicle maintenance requirements.
  • Risk & Issue Management: Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate project risks. You'll need to maintain a detailed risk register and develop contingency plans to ensure a smooth and continuous workflow.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all project activities adhere to strict UK rail standards, regulations, and health and safety legislation. You will be a champion for safety across the project.

Who You Are

  • Experience: Proven experience as a Project Manager on significant projects within the UK rail or rolling stock industry is essential. You must have direct experience in the redelivery, refurbishment, or introduction of a train fleet.
  • Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of rolling stock engineering, maintenance, and depot operations. Knowledge of UK rail industry standards and practices is required.
  • Project Management Skills: You must possess strong project management competencies, including planning, scheduling, risk management, and financial control.
  • Leadership: A natural leader with the ability to motivate and manage multi-disciplinary teams. You should have a collaborative and influential approach to leadership.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly to a wide range of audiences.
  • Qualifications: A formal project management qualification (e.g., APM, PRINCE2) or equivalent experience is highly desirable. An engineering or technical degree is also a plus.
