Senior Electrical Design Engineer - Building Services Consultancy (Croydon)

I'm supporting a successful and growing building services consultancy in Croydon that is looking to appoint a Senior Electrical Design Engineer. This is a key role within the business, well-suited to someone who has worked in a smaller consultancy environment where both hands-on design and management responsibilities are required.

This position offers the opportunity to lead junior engineers, manage projects, develop client relationships, and take ownership of electrical design delivery across a wide range of sectors including Education, Residential, Commercial, Healthcare, and Survey/Condition Reporting projects.

The Role
As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer, you'll take a lead role in overseeing design output, ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to a high technical standard. You'll manage project costs, support fee proposals, and play an active role in developing the technical standards within the team.
You will be involved from concept through to completion, producing specifications, drawings, schedules, reports, and cost estimates, while also managing client relationships and supporting the wider project team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design and project management across multiple building services projects.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff, ensuring high-quality output across the design team.
  • Produce and review specifications, drawings, design calculations, reports, and tender documents.
  • Attend client meetings and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Carry out site surveys, inspections, and condition reports across the UK.
  • Oversee quality inspections and ensure compliance with internal procedures and industry standards.
  • Contribute to fee assessments and assist in preparing fee proposals for new projects.
  • Monitor project finances, ensuring work is delivered within budget and programme.
  • Help shape and maintain electrical engineering standards within the organisation.
  • Provide direct technical support to engineers at all levels.

Experience Requirements

  • Strong background working within a building services consultancy (or design-focused role for a contractor).
  • Experience producing detailed electrical building services designs from concept to completion.
  • Knowledge of Building Regulations (including energy-related controls), CIBSE guides, IEE Regulations, CDM, and relevant British Standards.
  • Manual and software-based design calculations.
  • Hands-on CAD experience; ability to produce manual mark-ups and drawings.
  • Preparing tender packages, analysing tender returns, and producing budget costings.
  • Conducting site surveys and on-site project management.
  • Direct client liaison and relationship management.
  • Managing and mentoring junior engineers.

Education

  • HNC, Degree, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
