About us

Avencia are partnered with a leading insurer who are looking to recruit an Underwriter in their Croydon office.

The ATE team provides litigation insurance, helping ensure access to justice for those seeking remedies. Based in Croydon, the 15-person team works hybrid (two days in the office). They work exclusively with law firms, covering litigation types including commercial, clinical negligence, and personal injury.

This is a great opportunity for a solicitor looking to move in-house and work with an established team.

The role is initially being offered on a one year FTC.

Key accountabilities

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers
  • Risk assess proposals for a variety of cases - primarily personal injury and clinical negligence, with some commercial
  • Issue quotes and bind insurance policies where appropriate
  • Support governance strategy through:
    • Monitoring and training
    • Periodic reviews and follow-ups
    • Conducting external audits (including feedback and improvement plans) - some overnight stays may be required
  • Peer review work completed by other underwriters
  • Attend and participate in risk committee meetings
  • Deliver training to the team on legal issues and their impact on schemes/policies
  • Research and help develop new products for emerging markets
  • Possibly attend external exhibitions nationwide as required

Skills & experience

  • Legally qualified PQE 3 years+
  • Presentation skills
  • Litigation experience in personal injury and clinical negligence essential
  • Commercial litigation experience an advantage
  • Underwriting experience an advantage
  • Insurance experience an advantage
