The Role Maintenance Engineer
Fresh People are currently recruiting for a Maintenance Engineer on behalf of a leading fresh produce business based in Dartford, Kent. This is a full-time, on-site position working Monday to Friday, 1pm 10pm, as part of the Engineering team responsible for maintaining, servicing, and supporting machinery and equipment across a state-of-the-art facility. The role involves both reactive and proactive maintenance, supporting site operations by minimising downtime and ensuring safety and compliance at all times.
The Person
We are looking for a multi-skilled engineer with experience in FMCG or chilled environments, preferably with both electrical and mechanical competencies. Candidates must be apprenticeship trained (ONC/HNC), able to work independently with minimal supervision, and have a proactive, hands-on approach to engineering tasks. Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills are essential, as well as a solid understanding of health and safety standards. Experience with CMMS systems and packing machinery is highly desirable.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Carry out reactive and planned maintenance across all site machinery and equipment
- Minimise downtime by responding promptly to breakdowns and implementing effective fixes
- Complete daily checks and PPM tasks using CMMS software
- Support the installation and commissioning of new equipment
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition
- Collaborate with the Operations Team and support the training of other staff
- Ensure adherence to food safety and health & safety procedures
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts across engineering and operations
- Assist with relocation or repositioning of machinery and liaise with external engineers
- Identify and escalate any safety concerns or remedial actions beyond authority level
- Maintain high standards of documentation and reporting
Requirements
- Multi-skilled engineer with electrical and mechanical experience
- Previous experience in a chilled FMCG environment
- Apprenticeship trained ONC/HNC qualified
- Experience working with packing machinery and fault diagnostics
- Familiarity with CMMS systems and Microsoft Office
- Understanding of refrigeration systems (desirable)
- Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
