Job Description
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with proven experience in automation to join one of our prestigious clients based in Derby!
This is not a general design role were specifically looking for candidates with a background in designing automated machinery, ideally in packaging, food processing, or industrial manufacturing.
This role offers the chance to lead design projects from concept through to commissioning, creating machinery that makes a real impact in production environments.

What youll be doing
- Lead mechanical engineering projects from concept to commissioning
- Design complex mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies for automated machines
- Create accurate 3D models and detailed drawings in SolidWorks
- Draft User Requirement Specifications (URS) and Design Specifications (DS)
- Manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and technical documentation
- Collaborate with subcontract manufacturers and oversee procurement
- Develop and test prototypes, resolve design issues, and support commissioning
- Ensure all designs meet safety and compliance standards
- Produce essential documentation such as operator and maintenance manuals
Hours
Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm
Pay
£35,000 - £45,000 per annum (Depending on Experience)
Skills/Experience Required
- Minimum 3 years of experience designing automated machinery (e.g. packaging, conveyors, food processing, robotics, or related automation equipment)
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related field
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD software)
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, motion control, pneumatics, and manufacturing processes
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Proactive, solutions-focused mindset with attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work to tight deadlines
