To deliver high-quality, engaging English lessons that develop students’ literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills. The English Teacher will inspire a love of reading, writing, and language while ensuring students of all abilities achieve their potential. They will also contribute to the wider life of the school through enrichment activities and whole-school literacy initiatives.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching & Learning

Plan and deliver English lessons across KS3 and KS4 (and KS5 if applicable), in line with the National Curriculum and exam specifications.

Use a variety of teaching strategies to engage, challenge, and inspire students.

Differentiate lessons to meet the needs of all learners, including SEN and EAL students.

Assess, record, and report on student progress, providing clear and constructive feedback.

Promote a culture of reading for pleasure and appreciation of literature.
Curriculum & Assessment

Contribute to the design and development of schemes of work, assessments, and resources in English Language and Literature.

Prepare pupils for internal and external assessments (GCSE, A-Level, or equivalent).

Ensure lessons are inclusive, stretching the most able while supporting those who need additional help.

Create and maintain a positive, safe, and stimulating learning environment.

Uphold high standards of behaviour in line with school policies.

Encourage resilience, creativity, and independent thinking in all learners.
Enrichment & Wider Contribution

Support extracurricular English activities such as book clubs, creative writing workshops, or drama productions.

Lead or contribute to literacy initiatives across the school.

Provide additional support for exam preparation and targeted interventions.
Professional Responsibilities

Engage in professional development and remain up to date with developments in English education.

Attend staff meetings, parents’ evenings, and contribute to the wider school community.

Carry out additional duties as reasonably directed by the Headteacher.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or working towards QTS.

Strong subject knowledge in English Language and Literature.

Ability to deliver high-quality lessons that inspire and engage students.

Commitment to raising achievement and promoting literacy across the curriculum.

Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills.

Effective communication and organisational skills.
Desirable:

Experience teaching English at KS5.

Involvement in English/literacy clubs, competitions, or enrichment activities.

Experience supporting pupils with SEN or SEMH in English.

Evidence of strong exam outcomes in previous teaching roles.
