Location & Travel Requirements
Candidates must either reside within the operating region or be willing to travel regularly for site visits, meetings, and stakeholder engagement. The operating region includes:Hampshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, and London.
Role Purpose:
As a subject matter expert on energy, you will lead the development and execution of the company's strategic and operational approach to energy generation, distribution, and carbon management. This high-profile role will ensure the business meets regulatory requirements and delivers measurable benefits in energy efficiency, cost reduction, and carbon savings. You will also contribute significantly to the design and implementation of our sustainability strategy, embedding energy considerations across the organisation.
Energy Lead candidate profile:
Essential:
- Relevant technical degree (Energy Management, Engineering, Building Services or similar).
- Full professional membership (e.g., Energy Institute, CIBSE, EMA).
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role within a large, complex organisation.
- Proven leadership and change management experience.
- Strong track record in reducing energy use, costs, and carbon emissions.
- Commercial acumen in energy procurement and strategic planning.
- In-depth understanding of energy efficiency technologies and methods.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to analyse and present complex data effectively.
Desirable:
- Experience with heat networks and relevant regulation.
- Familiarity with housing sector or social housing energy needs.
Energy Lead key responsibilities:
- Lead the strategic direction for energy generation, distribution, and usage across the organisation, ensuring alignment with sustainability and business goals.
- Oversee the procurement and management of utility contracts via our energy brokerage arrangements, delivering best value.
- Prepare Aster for heat networks regulation, maintaining relationships with relevant regulators including Ofgem, DESNZ, and the Code Manager.
- Drive operational improvements to energy efficiency across homes, offices, and the supply chain, realising cost and carbon reduction opportunities.
- Develop and implement energy and decarbonisation strategies and monitor progress through appropriate KPIs.
- Identify and lead on commercialisation opportunities (e.g., renewable energy expansion, EV charge point networks).
- Optimise performance and deployment of existing renewable energy systems.
- Support procurement processes with technical expertise, including development of specifications and bid evaluation.
- Engage with and educate internal stakeholders, becoming the trusted go-to expert on energy-related matters.
- Lead carbon footprinting activities, improve Scope 3 coverage and data quality, and conduct regular audits and assessments.
- Manage mandatory and voluntary reporting including SECR and other sustainability disclosures.
