The Team
The Submarine Command System (SMCS) system provides situation awareness and Weapons Management capability for all Submarines in the Royal Navy flotilla including the existing Trafalgar, Astute and Vanguard Class of submarines and future platform class Dreadnought. The project portfolio comprises of programmes spanning all stages of the lifecycle from bidding through development, in-service support and disposal. The SMCS projects deliver to a number of customers within Industry and the MoD.

Position Overview
Software engineers required to join the software engineering team working on the Submarine Command Systems (SMCS) project in New Malden.

What you’ll be doing:
• Applying Knowledge to take a lead role in the design, implement & test SMCS system solutions.
• Guiding and mentoring other Software Engineers in their efforts throughout the lifecycle.
• Assisting the management team with reporting, planning, and estimation activities.
• Meeting the SMCS customers and end users, as required, to enable development of the SMCS Programme(s) and the continued evolution of the SMCS product as required.
• Ensure documents, software and other work products are stored and managed correctly within a configuration management system.
• Improve software performance by the capture and analysis of measurements.

Key Skillset
Essential:
• Proven ability taking lead decisions in a software development role.
• An understanding of all aspects of a software lifecycle and good knowledge of software lifecycle models (e.g. waterfall, Agile, Spiral)
• Proven Knowledge of using a high-level design methodology (e.g. UML)
• Excellent communication skills and Knowledge with mentoring staff.
• Considerable Knowledge of using C++ or C#
• Knowledge using a configuration management tool.

Desirable:
• Knowledge integrating Software based systems
• Knowledge of Ada
• Knowledge supporting multiple complex programmes.
• Knowledge in a multi-disciplined engineering environment
• Knowledge working in a defence project.
• Knowledge using requirements tools (e.g. DOORS)
• Knowledge with estimating for project bids
• Tracking using Earned Value Management
• Knowledge of Atlassian toolset
