Annual Salary: £20,452 (for Year 1 with yearly increases)

What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll join a supportive team of engineers and technicians who maintain and troubleshoot a reliable fleet of trams. You’ll gain experience in:
- Electrical and mechanical fault-finding
- Hands-on maintenance and repair work
- Team-based problem solving and workshop collaboration
- Working both inside our depot and outside on stationary trams
This programme is designed to help you grow your confidence, build technical skills, and become a qualified Technician in electrical, mechanical, or multi-skilled maintenance.
Training & Qualifications
This 4-year programme includes:
Years 1 & 2
- 2 days/week at Edinburgh College (Midlothian Campus)
- 3 days/week at our Edinburgh Tram Depot
Years 3 & 4
- Full-time hands-on learning at the depot
You’ll earn nationally recognised qualifications, including:
- Performing Engineering Operations (Electrical Route) SVQ Level 2
- NC Higher in Electrical Engineering
- Diploma in Engineering at SCQF Level 7 (Engineering Asset Lifecycle and Maintenance Pathway)
What Happens Next?
Upon completion, you’ll have the opportunity to take on a permanent role with CAF—as a Preventive, Corrective, or Modifications Technician, either in Edinburgh or at one of the other UK-wide sites. Many of CAF’s apprentices continue to grow with the business, developing careers that make a real impact.

We’re seeking individuals who are:
- Eager to learn and adapt
- Good communicators and team players
- Passionate about solving problems and working with tools
- Reliable, organised, and proactive
Minimum Requirements:
- National 5 (or equivalent) in Maths, and English
- Desirable – National 5 in Physics or Engineering Science
- Comfortable with basic IT (Microsoft Office, tablets, online systems)
- Able to attend a recruitment open day W/C 23/06/2025 at our Gogar Depot.
