Assistant Tax Manager
Edinburgh
33.75 hours a week – Monday to Friday
We are looking to recruit an Assistant Tax Manager to join our Tax team in Edinburgh. The successful candidate is expected to have previous experience in a similar role. The position is on a full-time permanent basis in the Edinburgh Office.
Purpose:
- To ensure correct Tax returns, appeals, etc are prepared and submitted to HMRC within time limits
- To maintain the profitability of Tax compliance work by recording time spent on clients accurately and ensuring work is carried out efficiently and with no time wastage
- Review own clients regularly to ensure files, section records and other matters, including feeing tax matters, are up to date
- Report to client care partner promptly when important issues arise
Core Duties:
- Undertake the timeous preparation and submission of annual Tax returns for individuals Trustees and Executors
- Provide pro-active advice on the mitigation of Tax liabilities and the organisation of a client’s Tax affairs. Agreeing correct tax liabilities with HMRC within time limits
- Respond promptly to clients’ and HMRC’s queries and correspondence and those of other agents
- Maintain internal records and files to assist in the above
- Complete draft Tax Returns form, for individuals and trusts after obtaining information from client, internal sources and external sources e.g. banks and brokers etc
- Prepare schedules of investment income and ensure that all records are present and correct
- Complete Capital Gains Tax calculation from information obtained internally or from the client
- Ensure that the Tax Return forms received, are sent to the client for signature with a bound copy and a summary sheet showing which tax is payable and when it is due for payment
- Liaise with HMRC in connection with Section 9A Enquiries and bring to conclusion
- Appeal incorrect assessments on behalf of the client
- Ensure clients receive Tax repayment, as necessary
- Maintain and up-date the Capital Gains Tax records and other appropriate records
- Review annually the client’s affairs against a checklist to consider if Tax mitigation is possible
- Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant Tax legislation and rules
- Assist Managers in certain management functions, particularly in the areas of mentoring and technical training of other members of the Department, as required by the Director of Tax Services/Senior Managers
- Undertake preparation of the more complex individual Tax returns with a grade assessment of 4 and 5; provide assistance to Managers on Tax returns with a grade assessment of 5 where required
- Assist Principal and/or Partners with ad hoc Tax advice and answers to Tax technical queries as and when required

Working Relationships
- Communicate with clients and external institutions e.g. Banks, HMRC, Stockbrokers, and Building Societies
- Working relationships with Trust Departments, Finance, Legal Teams and other teams throughout the Firm as necessary
- Building and maintaining a good working relationship with all clients, Partners and employees
Experience
- At least 3 years working for a Legal Firm, Chartered Accountants or have experience of working in a similar role
- Strong background in Personal Tax, UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Knowledge
- Trust and Executry Tax experience
- Knowledge of Tax Systems including CCH, Word and Excel
- Ideally ATT/CTA qualified, although not essential
