TheMechanical EngineeringLeadwill work collaboratively with the Customer within theMechanicalHandling and Building Services teams to providetechnical supporton Babcock non-nuclear and nuclearmechanicalhandling assets and facilities within the Devonport Dockyard site; for example, cranes,lifting equipmentand maintenance facilities. This role may include but is not limited to: being thetechnicalinterface with the customer, providing professional and flexibletechnicalaccountability to the ongoing operations and maintenance of DRDL extantmechanicalhandling assets. ensuring that allmechanicalaspects of facility modifications, redesigns and new infrastructure are scoped, developed and delivered to meet operational requirements, safety standards and compliance obligations, leading a small lead ofmechanicalhandling and building services engineers supporting various projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage directly with the customer to understand requirements and providemechanical engineeringsupport and attend Authorisation Group meetings.
  • Periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and activities. Specifying replacement equipment/components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for permanent modifications.
  • Scope,designand propose modifications to existing assets or new facilities based on customer needs and system limitations. Engage in the full lifecycle development ofmechanicalprojects, fromconceptual designthrough to implementation and maintenance.
  • Maintaining configuration oftechnicaldrawings and documentation. Assessing and approvingtechnical documentationprior to customer submission, ensuringtechnical, regulatory and safety considerations have been addressed.
  • Lead and coordinate a small team ofmechanicalengineers, providing direction,mentorshipand oversight.
  • Liaise with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders to alignmechanicalsupport with broader infrastructure projects. Support theplanning and executionof installation, commissioning and testing phases as needed.
  • Providetechnicalinput toproject documentation, risk assessments and progress reporting.


Work Experience

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors degree (minimum) inMechanical Engineeringor a closely related discipline; Masters degree or working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred.
  • Typically 5+ years of relevantmechanical engineeringexperience in a highly regulated industry (e.g., nuclear, maritime, infrastructure,oil and gasetc. ).
  • Knowledge and awareness of cranes, crane safety and associatedmechanicalhandling systems Proficient with electrical CAD software and tools such asETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar.
  • Proficiency in understanding/production of electrical/mechanical engineeringdrawings
  • Proficiency in understanding/production of hand calculations/FEA
  • Experience in thedesignprocess and producing evidence of thedesignand substantiation of systems and components.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Good Communication skills - Makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.
  • Understanding of nuclear industry and/or other safety critical environments. Experience in working in a dockyard, marine, Defence or MoD environments particularly with asset lifecycle support.
  • Experience of cranes/lifting equipmentand crane operations, especially safety critical and safety related systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical/mechanical/hydraulic systemsas typical to cranes and hauling equipment
  • Knowledge ofmechanicalbuilding services, includingHVAC, compressed air, water systems and thermal/fluid systems
