Health and Safety Manager - Civil Construction - Rochester Area

We are looking for a highly experienced and driven Health and Safety Manager to lead the safe and efficient delivery of health and safety practices on site. This is a hands-on, boots-on-the-ground leadership role ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic site environments and has a passion for ensuring the well-being of the team and the successful delivery of projects.

As the Health and Safety Manager, you'll be responsible for managing day-to-day health and safety operations across multiple sites, ensuring that all work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to compliance standards. You'll report directly to the Compliance Manager and act as the key link between site teams and senior management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and coordinate all on-site health and safety works, including implementation of safety protocols, subcontractor safety, and site inductions.
  • Drive a positive safety culture, workflow, and resource allocation to meet project safety requirements.
  • Enforce WHS/OHS compliance, lead safety initiatives, and ensure site safety standards are consistently maintained.
  • Monitor health and safety performance and workmanship, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Collaborate closely with Site Managers, Engineers, and Forepersons to ensure works align with health and safety plans and construction programs.
  • Identify potential health and safety risks early and implement corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular site walk-throughs, toolbox talks, and progress meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records of site activity and report on health and safety milestones to management.

About You:

  • Proven experience in a senior site-based construction role with a focus on health and safety (e.g., Site Supervisor, Foreperson, or Site Manager with H&S responsibilities).
  • Deep understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and site operations, with a strong emphasis on safety.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage large teams and multiple trades regarding health and safety.
  • Excellent knowledge of WHS legislation and safety practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications, with a focus on identifying safety implications.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, decision-making, and prioritisation under pressure, especially in safety-critical situations.
  • NEBOSH and CSCS card required; relevant trade qualifications or Cert IV in Building and Construction highly regarded.

Salary and Package:

  • £60,000 - £65,000 per annum
  • 20 days holiday (starting allowance)
  • Van and fuel card
  • Standard pension scheme
