Location:  Glasgow - Flexible Hybrid role with around 60% field-based work, including office and client visits

PURPOSE OF ROLE

On behalf of our client, a leading player in the commercial insurance sector, Lawes Consulting is currently recruiting a Senior Commercial Mid-Market P&C Underwriter to help drive profitable growth and strengthen underwriting performance across the mid-market portfolio. This is a high-impact position designed for a seasoned professional with both strategic insight and hands-on underwriting expertise. The ideal candidate will contribute directly to financial results, support broker relationships, and lead technical excellence within a dynamic, fast-paced team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead underwriting activity for a defined portfolio, ensuring sustainable, profitable growth across new and renewal business
  • Cultivate and manage strong commercial relationships with brokers to unlock new business opportunities
  • Make data-driven underwriting decisions using modern tools and analytics platforms
  • Monitor account-level performance and proactively implement strategies to maintain or improve profitability
  • Mentor and support colleagues through knowledge sharing and skill development, fostering a high-performance team culture
  • Actively support innovation and process improvement, championing business transformation initiatives
  • Maintain full compliance with regulatory and internal underwriting standards

DAY-TO-DAY

  • Liaise regularly with brokers to understand their business needs and offer tailored coverage solutions
  • Underwrite complex risks across multiple lines, using both experience and available market intelligence
  • Work cross-functionally with other business units to ensure alignment of underwriting strategy and overall business goals
  • Analyse competitor and market developments to stay ahead of industry trends
  • Embrace the use of mobile and digital tools to streamline workflows and increase decision-making efficiency
  • Represent the company at industry events and client meetings, acting as a trusted market-facing expert

EXPERIENCE

  • Significant experience in a Commercial underwriting role, ideally with mid-market focus
  • Proven ability to deliver on both new business acquisition and profitable account retention
  • Strong understanding of commercial insurance products, risk profiles, and underwriting methodologies
  • Previous experience mentoring or coaching junior underwriters or colleagues
  • Progress toward Dip CII (or equivalent) is advantageous, though not essential

SKILLS

  • Strong technical underwriting skills, with a solid grasp of risk evaluation and pricing strategies
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with key stakeholders
  • Commercially minded with effective negotiation and influencing abilities
  • Comfortable with data analysis and using technology to inform underwriting decisions
