Mechanical Design & Test Engineer 

Location: Glasgow 

Position type: Full-time (Contract Prefrered) 

Our client, a leading space-sector company, is seeking a proactive and competent Design & Test Engineer to support their orbital ambitions.

This role is suited to candidates with 5–10 years’ industrial experience in the space, aerospace, or product design sectors (or with highly transferable skills). You will need strong attention to detail, broad engineering experience, and the ability to deliver technical products to a very high standard.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of technologies and techniques including:

  • Pressure test equipment
  • Composites fabrication
  • Infrastructure commissioning
  • Product development
  • Integration and system-level testing

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings (SolidWorks, Autodesk).
  • Lead internal design reviews and contribute to supplier/client reviews.
  • Work with electronics engineers on subsystem integration (PCBs, sensors, comms hardware).
  • Develop solutions across structures, propulsion, thermal management, and safety systems.
  • Apply DfX principles for efficient manufacturing and servicing.
  • Define and execute rigorous test plans (shock, vibration, thermal cycling, IP standards).
  • Analyse test results, inform design improvements, and support prototype builds.
  • Communicate technical details effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • BEng (Hons) or higher in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Strong background in design engineering for complex electro-mechanical products.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and PDM software.
  • Hands-on hardware testing experience.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (CNC, injection moulding, sheet metal, 3D printing).
  • Ability to obtain/hold UK security clearance (BPSS).
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience with composites or advanced materials.
  • Familiarity with pressure systems (PSSR) and systems engineering principles.
  • Working knowledge of FEA/CFD.
  • Practical, hands-on engineering skills for prototyping.
