General Builder

Location: Godalming, Surrey

Salary: £33,500 per annum

Our client’s school is beautiful and a wonderful place to live and work. It was founded in 1611 and moved to its present magnificent 250-acre site near Godalming in Surrey in 1872. Few schools can offer such a splendid backdrop for teaching and learning, and the school community is very strong, with excellent relationships between pupils and staff.

The Role

Reporting to the Fabric Maintenance Manager, the General Builder will be required to work efficiently and professionally to deliver an excellent service to the Estate Department and the wider School community. The School has a wide range of buildings and interior finishes from late Victorian to modern day architecture. He/she will be required to fully contribute the necessary skills and efforts to the Estate Department, allowing it to fulfil its function within the school.

Main Duties:

  • The role will require you to be a good 'all-rounder’ and work on any 'inhouse’ projects that may occur.
  • To undertake building and roofing construction and maintenance tasks as required.
  • To carry out regular routine duties that will include: - clearing drains, clearing gutters, clearing roofs
  • The general builder will work closely with the various trades to ensure the day-to-day work orders are processed within the designated timescales.
  • To report and react to maintenance issues and assist other trades as required.
  • To collect, transport and deliver materials around the site as required for works being carried out by yourself and other members of the Estate department.
  • To assist Estate department with the assembly and support of access and manual handling equipment.
  • To have a good understanding of relevant roles and site-specific Health & Safety including COSHH, PUWER and working at height.
  • To report Health & Safety concerns to the Fabric Maintenance Manager.
  • To escort contractors around the School when required.
  • To be able to work unsupervised on designated maintenance tasks.
  • To carry out other tasks as may be required from time to time by the Fabric Maintenance Manager and other Estate Department Managers.
  • To work in a safe, clean and tidy manner around pupils, support staff and general public and generally protect the fabric of the School buildings.
  • Whilst you will work for the Fabric Maintenance Manager, you may also work for other members of the Estate Department at certain times.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Multi-trade skills
  • Relevant trade qualifications and/or trade experience for this role.
  • Proven experience of managing multiple projects and dealing with a wide range of size and type of building tasks.
  • Holder of a clean, valid driving licence.
