Process Safety Engineer

Reports to:
Head of Safety

Role Purpose:
Provide cross-functional support on process safety, acting as the focal point for risk assessments, compliance, and improvement initiatives. Be the person who keeps people and sites safe

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and track process hazard analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, SIL) and follow-up actions.

  • Support preparation and response to COMAH inspections.

  • Maintain process safety standards, guides, and compliance documentation.

  • Embed process safety within operations and project design.

  • Manage external consultants to deliver specialist support.

  • Assist with incident investigations and implement improvements.

  • Lead fire detection, mitigation, and control strategy reviews.

  • Contribute to projects and systems of work (e.g., MOC, alarm management, emergency planning).

  • Lead internal audits and communicate findings across the business.

  • Monitor legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Track and report on process safety performance indicators.

About you:

  • Strong organisational and planning skills.

  • Clear, confident communicator at all levels.

  • Positive, proactive approach to HSE matters.

  • Ability to build strong cross-departmental relationships.

  • Influential without formal authority.

Experience & Skills:

  • Engineering or science background (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent).

  • In-depth knowledge of COMAH and major accident hazard risk.

  • Experience with regulators (HSE/EA).

  • Strong grounding in process safety principles and management systems.

  • Skilled in compliance auditing.

  • Familiar with P&IDs and technical drawings.

  • Understanding of ALARP principles.

  • Able to influence and collaborate across departments.
