Job Purpose

The Health & Safety Manager plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust health and safety programs, policies, and procedures, ensuring full compliance with relevant legislation and company standards. The role also promotes a proactive safety culture across all sites and operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve company-wide Health & Safety (H&S) policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and best practices.
  • Review and monitor risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)/method statements across all departments, ensuring they are up to date, comprehensive, and effectively communicated.
  • Conduct an annual BCarm audit to verify that all departments are completing required refresher training, and that HR is correctly administering BCarm induction training. Audit results are reported to departmental managers for necessary corrective actions.
  • Complete site-specific risk assessments when required, particularly in response to new processes, equipment, or changes in working conditions.
  • Provide expert advice on specific Health & Safety training requirements across all business areas, coordinating with department heads to ensure all staff are adequately trained.
  • Conduct regular inspections and H&S surveys at all New Era depots to ensure compliance with internal policies and statutory obligations, while promoting a culture of safety.
  • Keep abreast of latest H&S legislation, standards, and industry developments, and lead the implementation of relevant changes throughout the business.
  • Ensure fire safety compliance at all depots, including the maintenance of fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency evacuation plans, and the delivery of fire safety training and drills.
  • Act as the main point of contact for external bodies such as the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and fire authorities during inspections or investigations.
  • Lead accident and incident investigations, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence.
  • Support the business with emergency preparedness planning, including first aid provision, business continuity, and crisis response measures.

Qualification/Skills required

  • NEBOSH Qualification in Occupational Health & Safety as a minimum.
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining leading metrics and driving associated culture change.
  • Proven ability to design and conduct H&S based training for groups of people.
  • Experience works with occupational H&S management at work systems.
  • Experience of ISO and 45001.
  • Exceptional verbal and numerate skills.
  • Proven competence with IT systems.
  • Ability to influence effectively and present at all business levels.
  • Must have a full UK driving licence.

  • Experience of working with DSEAR and PUWER
