Instrument Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Chartered Instrument Engineer to join our Site Engineering Leadership Team. The Senior IE will ensure that all instrument assets are designed, installed, commissioned, maintained, inspected, and tested in full compliance with UK legislation and recognised best practice. This role is pivotal in developing and delivering the instrument asset strategy and overseeing the competency programme for both in-house engineers and contractors.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the site strategy for instrumentation and automation engineering excellence, covering asset integrity, lifecycle planning, and regulatory compliance to ensure assets meet production targets.

  • Lead the competency assessment, development, and appointment of all duty holders within instrument and automation engineering, including professional engineers.

  • Act as the technical interface with the UK Competent Authority (HSE), external specialists, and engineering service providers.

  • Interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with instrumentation and automation standards, including managing deviations and approvals.

  • Provide expert engineering support for the maintenance, improvement, and operation of assets, including oversight of specialist contractors.

  • Approve repairs and modifications involving EHS-critical equipment.

  • Contribute to the site engineering strategy, improvement programmes, and capital expenditure plans as part of the leadership team.

  • Promote and sustain a positive, high-performance culture, embedding best practices across engineering disciplines.

  • Take ownership of PSM and COMAH compliance for instrument and automation systems.



Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Instrumentation, Control, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and membership of a relevant professional body.

  • At least 10 years' leadership experience in instrument engineering within chemical or high-hazard manufacturing (Upper Tier COMAH) environments.

  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation design, control principles, commissioning, maintenance philosophies, and lifecycle management.

  • Proven expertise in functional safety (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511).

  • Skilled in leadership, negotiation, influencing, and conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Background in project/programme management with experience as a Responsible Engineer.
