Job Description - SEN Tribunals Officer

East Sussex County Council is seeking a knowledgeable and highly motivated SEN Tribunals Officer to support its Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) service. The successful applicant will have direct experience working with SEND Tribunal cases (SENDIST) and will play a key role in supporting legal compliance and delivering effective case management around Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and represent the Local Authority in SENDIST appeals and tribunal hearings.
  • Draft legally robust case statements, responses, and evidence bundles in line with SEND legislation.
  • Lead on case preparation and liaison with legal services, schools, and internal SEND teams.
  • Attend resolution meetings and mediate disputes with parents and professionals.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with EHCP statutory timeframes and tribunal processes.
  • Provide expert advice to teams on SEND law, case law, and tribunal processes.
  • Deliver internal coaching and training to raise understanding of SEND Code of Practice and tribunal best practice.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Substantial experience in SEND Tribunal work, either from a Local Authority, legal service, or as a parent-side advocate.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Children and Families Act 2014
    • SEND Code of Practice (2015)
    • Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
    • Mediation and Disagreement Resolution Services
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills with attention to legal detail.
  • Ability to collate, analyse, and present complex information effectively under pressure.
  • IT proficient with working knowledge of case management systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel.

Working Pattern:

  • Hybrid working model - 2 days office-based (East Sussex), 3 days remote.
  • Flexibility may be offered for strong remote candidates.
