Job Title: Gully Operator - Highways (HGV Driver)

We are currently recruiting an experienced and safety-conscious Gully Operator with a valid HGV Class 2 license to join our Highways Maintenance team. You will be responsible for the operation of vacuum tankers to clean and maintain road gullies, helping to ensure effective drainage and prevent flooding across the local road network.

This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in public service, and understands the importance of road safety and environmental responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate HGV gully emptier/vacuum tankers across the highways network.

  • Undertake scheduled gully cleaning and emergency call-outs in all weather conditions.

  • Use jetting and suction equipment to clear silt, debris, and blockages from drainage systems.

  • Report damaged or faulty assets such as broken covers or collapsed drains.

  • Carry out basic vehicle checks and routine maintenance, reporting any defects.

  • Accurately complete daily work logs, inspection reports, and job documentation.

  • Maintain compliance with highways, traffic management, and site safety regulations.

  • Liaise with supervisors, traffic management teams, and other highways crews on site.

Essential Requirements:
  • Valid HGV Class 2 (Category C) license

  • CPC qualification and Digital Tachograph card

  • Experience working on or near highways (live carriageways)

  • Good understanding of on-site Health & Safety practices

  • Ability to follow work schedules and operate machinery responsibly

  • Willing to work flexible hours, including early starts, nights, or weekend call-outs

  • Physically fit, with the ability to work in confined and outdoor environments
