Environmental Standards Officer

Hours: 08.00 - 16.00 Monday to Friday
Purpose of the Role
In this vital community-focused role, you will consult, challenge and influence residents and stakeholders to adopt sustainable waste management practices. You'll take the lead in shaping and delivering local environmental improvement plans, reflecting the unique needs of each community.
This is more than just a waste-focused role-it's about empowering residents, educating communities, and making real, measurable change on the streets of Hull.
Key Responsibilities
Develop partnerships with local stakeholders to deliver environmental projects that matter to communities.
Monitor street cleanliness, recycling contamination and waste presentation, identifying and resolving issues on the ground.
Build and maintain strong relationships with residents, groups and community centres to identify environmental priorities and improve inclusion.
Support and guide local stakeholders to access relevant waste services and information.
Lead community engagement initiatives such as litter picks, environmental education in schools, and community adoption projects.
Act as the first point of contact for residents and stakeholders regarding local waste issues-offering practical, immediate solutions.
Engage with migrant communities to promote understanding of waste systems and local social norms.
Gather data, compile reports and share progress with the project team to inform future planning.
What You'll Need
Experience working in a community engagement, environmental or public service role.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and influence behaviour.
Ability to work independently across different neighbourhoods, balancing multiple priorities.
Confident in using technology such as spreadsheets, mobile apps, and reporting tools.
Passion for sustainability, and a drive to support inclusive and positive environmental change.
Working Relationships
You'll work closely with:
Waste Operations, Streetcare and Enforcement Teams
Housing Officers, Neighbourhood Coordinators, and local partners
External stakeholders including landlords, Hull University, emergency services, and community groups
Additional Info
This role involves on-the-ground work and community visits, so flexibility and a proactive mindset are essential.
You will be responsible for the use and care of IT equipment and community engagement materials.
Though the post holds no budget responsibility, you will have a key role in influencing service delivery decisions in collaboration with other council teams.
