We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Ecologist to join our clients team, playing a pivotal role in advancing environmental excellence and ecological expertise. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead comprehensive ecological projects while providing specialist guidance on woodland management and harvesting initiatives. Covering the North of Scotland, you will be at the forefront of delivering innovative ecological solutions, conducting critical environmental assessments, and ensuring our operations maintain the highest environmental standards. Working closely with diverse stakeholders, you will drive business development opportunities while contributing to the sustainable management of natural resources and biodiversity conservation across our varied project portfolio.

Role Responsibilities:

  • To plan and manage ecological surveys and assessments to meet client needs and company goals, ensuring high-quality delivery while overseeing budgets, timelines, and resources efficiently
  • To provide expert guidance to internal and external stakeholders to ensure environmental compliance with best practices, legislation, and company policies
  • To prepare and deliver technical reports, ecological assessments, and licence applications to support planning and regulatory approvals
  • To promote and uphold environmental and health & safety standards by conducting inspections, ensuring compliance with procedures and legislation, and contributing to internal audits and risk assessments
  • To mentor and train colleagues in ecological practices (e.g., PEAs, ECIAs, HRAs), support professional development, and assist in maintaining and updating the Environmental Management System
  • To identify and pursue new ecological opportunities, support business growth, and contribute to forestry and environmental management operations

Skills you will need:
Essential:

  • A degree in ecology, environmental science, land use, or related field
  • Proven experience of successfully leading ecological projects
  • Expertise in conducting and coordinating habitat and protected species surveys
  • A holder of protected species licences (e.g., bats, newts) and CSCS card
  • A strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and policy
  • CIEEM membership (or equivalent)
  • Highly organised with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A skilled relationship builder with a proven ability to cultivate and maintain strong client relations
  • Diligent and self motivated
  • Commercial acumen
  • Confident using GIS tools (e.g., QGIS), mobile data apps, and Microsoft 365 for ecological data and reporting
  • UK driving license and desire to travel

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of forestry management and working within multidisciplinary environmental teams
  • Competent in preparing PEAs, ECIAs, HRAs, management plans, and designing mitigation strategies
