This role is pivotal in providing effective professional Social Work provision across Adult Social Care.


About the Role: As a Mental Health Social Worker / Senior Practitioner, you will play a major role in delivering our strategic priorities. You will be responsible for managing a caseload of customers and carers with complex needs, undertaking statutory duties under the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Providing professional social work interventions aimed at improving customer wellbeing, independence, and recovery.
  • Working in collaboration with health colleagues from Mental Health Trusts to provide an effective integrated health and social care service.
  • Undertaking assessments, including carer's and financial assessments, and developing outcome-based, customer-focused support plans.
  • Ensuring appropriate and timely intervention for customers with urgent needs.
  • Promoting user empowerment, anti-discriminatory practice, and adhering to the principles of "Putting People First".
  • Carrying out and managing the process of MHA assessments and DOLS / Best Interests Assessments, consistent with legal and statutory obligations. (There is an expectation that all social workers in the team will hold AMHP and BIA Assessor qualifications or be willing to train.)
  • Participating in the AMHP rota and engaging in ongoing AMHP training.
  • Ensuring safeguarding concerns for adults and children are appropriately raised and investigations progressed.
  • Providing professional supervision to qualified and non-qualified staff, and potentially acting as a practice assessor/educator.
  • Maintaining high standards of professional practice, keeping up-to-date records, and complying with relevant legislation and codes of conduct (HCPC).
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Contributing to team performance, service development, and embodying the council's values and policies.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educated to degree level with an appropriate professional Social Work qualification (e.g., CSS/CQSW or DipSW).
  • Knowledge of the Care Act (2014) and other relevant legislation (e.g., Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005).
  • Demonstrable understanding of the principles and application of excellent adult social care.
  • Experience in creating effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Strong literacy, numeracy, interpersonal, and IT skills.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in a similar role within a Local Authority.
  • A relevant Post Qualifying award (e.g., Practice Teaching, PQ Award).
  • Experience as a qualified practitioner in Mental Health Settings.
  • Experience in commissioning and coordinating the delivery of services.
  • Proficiency in using case-based ICT systems.
