Connect2Dudley is seeking a skilled and dedicated Mechanic.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of mechanical systems and be able to diagnose and repair a variety of vehicles and machinery. This role requires attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • To inspect, service and repair the Councils fleet vehicles
  • Ground maintenance equipment to include specialist body /equipment work
  • Carry out of periodic routine roadworthiness inspections to legal requirements and standards laid down by the Driver & vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Dudley MBC requirements including those necessary to pass MOT tests and maintain the councils Operators Compliance Score as green.
  • Where vehicles are found to be unfit during routine/ planned inspections or spot checks, notify the Fleet Compliance Officer/Fleet Co-ordinator of the condition of vehicles and, when necessary, withdraw them from service.
  • To liaise and advise Hackney Carriage, Private Hire & Special Event vehicle operators of defects and where such vehicles fail to meet the Authorities licensing standards withhold issue of the Licence Plate.
  • To provide supporting technical vehicle information to Licensing Services and the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Trade Associations.
  • To liaise with Transport Services, Licensing staff re: the inspection and testing of vehicles, and liaise with customers in association with the vehicle inspections.
  • To report vehicle misuse, damage or premature wear of vehicle components.
  • To carry out fault diagnostics to ascertain any damage, breakages or faults and carry out rectification works as appropriate to the Council's fleet of horticultural machinery and plant.
  • To carry out servicing and overhaul of machinery during the summer mowing period and the winter overhaul programme in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • To use gas / electric Mig and Arc welding equipment for repairs and fabrication.
  • To design, fabricate and modify horticultural equipment as appropriate.
  • To use grinding equipment purposely designed for sharpening mower bottom blades and cutting cylinders.
  • To undertake both Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Taxi & Special Event vehicles mechanical inspections, ensuring compliance with the Authority's conditions of Licence.
  • To inspect vehicles in accordance with the VOSA testers manual to MOT standards on class 4, 5L & 7 of vehicle and include the use of computerised systems. To remain up to date with VOSA legislation and directives relating to vehicle testing and the testers manual.
  • Participate in a My Annual Review meeting and undertake a plan of training where necessary. Develop his/her own skills and expertise in a professional manner

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Mechanic or in a similar role is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, engines, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills for liaising with team members and clients.
  • A valid driver's licence is essential; additional qualifications in automotive technology are advantageous.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • MOT testing experience- preferably.
