Senior Electrical Design & Development Engineer Location: Leeds Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 Role Summary:Our client, a successful and well-established manufacturer and supplier of electrical power switchboards, is looking for a Senior Electrical Design & Development Engineer to join their expanding team. This is a newly created role due to continued business growth, providing a fantastic opportunity for an experienced professional to take a lead role in both the tendering and production of electrical switchboards, and also the design, development and testing of new power switchgear products. As a Senior Electrical Design & Development Engineer, you will oversee technical design, lifetime quality, conformity and product testing as well as cost estimation and project management as a key part in the Company’s growth. Opportunities for progression may exist for the right candidate to step into a leadership role. Key Responsibilities:
  • Take a pivotal role in the costing and tendering of electrical switchboards, ensuring high-quality solutions.
  • Maintain full ownership of complex projects from enquiry through to fabrication.
  • Lead the design and development of new products, bringing them to market in a timely and cost effect manner
  • Ensure the completion of all relevant technical file documents including producing operation and maintenance guides.
  • Oversee both the technical and commercial aspects of project management.
  • Prepare and issue technical drawings using AutoCAD LT for client approval and production.
  • Engage with contractors / subcontractors to support design specification, working closely with tendering engineers to ensure the best customer solution
  • Act as a key point of contact for customers, providing expert advice and technical guidance.
  • Work closely with internal teams, including design, production, and sales, to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Provide technical guidance within the team.
  • Play an integral role in the company’s expansion, including contributions to a new production facility.
  • Utilise Schneider/Merlin switchgear (Prisma, PowerPact, ACB’s, EcoStruxure) and power factor correction systems where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with BS Standard Fuse Boards (Miniform, Red Spot) and other industry regulations.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to the company’s technical innovation.
Key Skills & Experience:
  • Extensive experience in power switchgear (Schneider preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of both electrical and mechanical engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD LT and familiarity with production processes.
  • Experience in managing projects, commercial operations, and tendering processes.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of product design and development
  • Experience in working through formal testing processes (BS EN 60947-1 and 61439-1)
  • Strong leadership capabilities, with proven experience working with internal teams
  • Ability to engage with contractors, subcontractors, and external stakeholders.
  • Self-driven with the ability to take initiative and adapt to a dynamic environment.
  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to balance technical and financial considerations.
