Role Overview & PurposeInsurance business with a lengthy record as a leader within their field, a significant market share and an ever-growing customer base are seeking a Risk & Compliance Director to join the executive team located in their im pressive head office located in Liverpool.

Reporting to the CEO and Audit & Risk Committee, you will lead the development, embedding and ongoing evolution of the firm’s risk management, governance, and regulatory compliance frameworks. This strategic leadership role will ensure continued resilience, regulatory alignment, and effective oversight supporting both innovation and the commitment to policyholder wellbeing.

Role responsibilities.

  • Lead the enhancement of the Risk Management Framework (RMF), including the 3 Lines of Defence model and Risk & Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) processes.
  • Oversee development of risk appetite statements aligned to strategic goals.
  • Drive the embedding of the revised RMF and risk management across the business, gaining buy-in from key stakeholders.
  • Review and enhance governance structures, ensuring clarity in roles, responsibilities and committee Terms of Reference.
  • Develop and maintain a Board Skills Matrix, supporting regular capability reviews and succession planning.
  • Lead remediation of compliance gaps and ensure ongoing alignment with best practice.
  • Maintain and evolve the Management Responsibilities Map (MRM), ensuring clarity of Senior Manager Functions and prescribed responsibilities.
  • Embed governance processes for ongoing review and regulatory readiness.
  • Design and launch a Culture Dashboard to track key behavioural and cultural risk indicators.
  • Support the embedding of the desired risk culture across the whole business

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven leadership experience in enterprise risk and compliance, preferably within insurance, mutuals, or regulated financial services.
  • Deep knowledge of corporate governance codes, risk frameworks, and regulatory regimes including SM&CR.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at board and executive level.
  • Passion for embedding a proactive, value-adding risk culture in a fast-evolving organisation.
