Design Manager - Infrastructure, Rail, Tunnelling & Energy
Location: London
Salary: 60,000-70,000 + car allowance + benefits
We're supporting a leading Tier 1 contractor delivering complex, multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects across the UK. They're looking to appoint an experienced Design Manager to lead design coordination, compliance, and assurance across major transport, rail, tunnelling, and energy schemes.
Working closely with the tender and pre-construction team, you'll play a key role in shaping early design solutions-reviewing methodologies, buildability, and technical risks to ensure the most efficient and compliant approach is developed from the outset. You'll provide technical input into bids, coordinate with design consultants, and ensure that proposals align with both client requirements and delivery strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the full design process across multiple disciplines
- Manage consultant deliverables, technical approvals, and design change control
- Collaborate with the tender team on buildability, methodology, and technical submissions
- Review designs for safety, constructability, and compliance with contract requirements
- Chair design and interface meetings with client engineering and delivery teams
- Drive value engineering, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout design and delivery phases
Experience & Background
- Proven experience managing design within major infrastructure or civil engineering projects (rail, tunnelling, highways, or energy)
- Strong understanding of design and build delivery, temporary works, and pre-construction processes
- Experience providing technical input during tender and bid preparation
- Familiarity with design assurance and approval bodies (e.g. Network Rail, LUL, TAA)
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Chartered or working towards CEng desirable)
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong Design Manager who enjoys working at the interface of design, delivery, and tendering, driving innovation and ensuring every design solution is robust, buildable, and commercially sound.
