About the Role

We re looking for an experienced and highly skilled Technical Building Manager to oversee the school’s advanced mechanical, electrical, and building management systems. This pivotal role combines technical expertise, strategic oversight, and team leadership to ensure the smooth operation of a complex and innovative school environment.

The postholder will be the go-to expert for all technical matters, responsible for maintaining high standards, driving operational improvements, and implementing energy-efficient solutions. This is a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge building technology and have a direct impact on the school’s operational success.

Key Responsibilities

System Operations & Maintenance

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation and maintenance of critical building systems, including HVAC, lighting, AHUs, CHP, GSHP, BMS, and emergency power systems.

  • Develop and implement preventative and reactive maintenance strategies to ensure reliability and safety.

  • Monitor system performance, identify inefficiencies, and implement improvements to optimize energy use.

Strategic Planning & Budget Management

  • Work with the Cluster Facilities Manager to plan and manage budgets for maintenance, repairs, and capital projects.

  • Evaluate and approve procurement of services and equipment, ensuring value for money and alignment with long-term goals.

  • Advise on system upgrades, cost implications, and sustainability initiatives.

Team Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead a team of site operatives, promoting professional development, safety, and operational excellence.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for technical queries from staff, contractors, and suppliers.

  • Build strong working relationships with specialist suppliers and service providers to ensure smooth operations.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Take responsibility for health and safety across building systems, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct risk assessments, maintain accurate records, and ensure safe working practices.

  • Health and Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) is highly desirable.

Sustainability & Innovation

  • Lead initiatives to reduce energy use and the school’s carbon footprint.

  • Recommend innovative solutions to enhance system performance.

  • Encourage sustainable practices across the school and team operations.

School Policies & Safeguarding

  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusivity in all aspects of work.

  • Uphold safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring the welfare of children and young people at all times.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent) – Essential

  • Health and Safety qualification (NEBOSH, IOSH) – Desirable

  • Experience managing complex building systems, ideally in an educational or similar environment – Essential

  • Previous experience working in an educational setting – Essential

  • Budget management, project management, and contractor management experience – Desirable

  • Strong organisational and planning abilities, able to prioritise workload effectively.

  • Competent with ICT, including Microsoft Office and building management software.
