We are seeking a proactive and experienced Senior Planning Officer to join our client dynamic Planning team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the built environment and delivering sustainable development across the borough.

You will manage a varied and complex caseload of planning applications, provide expert advice on planning policy, and support junior staff. This position offers a chance to contribute to major regeneration projects, strategic site delivery, and high-profile developments that directly impact local communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on a caseload of complex planning applications, with a focus on residential development and arboriculturally impact.
  • Assess and determine planning applications involving TPOs, trees in conservation areas, and new housing.
  • Provide professional advice to applicants, elected members, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the implementation of housing growth targets while upholding environmental and design standards.
  • Represent the Council at Planning Committee and, where necessary, at appeal hearings or public inquiries.
  • Liaise with internal departments (housing, environmental services, legal) and external partners.
  • Help develop policies and guidance related to green infrastructure and housing design.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team environment.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • RTPI accredited degree and eligible for (or current) MRTPI membership.
  • Significant experience in development management within a local authority or similar setting.
  • Sound knowledge of planning legislation, housing policy, and environmental protections relating to trees.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage complex cases independently and meet statutory deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience in strategic site delivery or regeneration projects.
  • Previous local government or consultancy experience.
  • Experience dealing with Tree Preservation Orders and arboricultural impact assessments.
  • Understanding of biodiversity net gain and climate-resilient planning.
