Associate Director, Highway Engineering Design

Location:London with flexibility on remote working

The Role:

My client is looking for an experienced and driven professional to manage and oversee the delivery of a diverse range of traffic, active travel, public realm, and highway engineering projects in the UK. You'll provide technical leadership and project management support across multidisciplinary projects for new and existing clients, developing and maintaining strong client relationships within the sector.

Key Responsibilities:

路Leading the delivery of traffic, active travel, public realm, and highway/infrastructure engineering projects from concept through to detailed design.
路Acting as Project Director and Project Manager, monitoring financial performance and key performance indicators.
路Reviewing and approving technical designs, drawings, and reports, ensuring compliance with project briefs and UK/regional standards.
路Providing leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to engineers and designers, supporting team skills and professional development.
路Driving innovation and continuous improvement in design processes, staying up to date with best practice and emerging technologies.
路Developing and maintaining sound client relationships, identifying and realising new commercial opportunities.
路Preparing detailed proposals, client briefs, and fee proposals; contribute to or lead bids.
路Collaborating with other teams and build strong internal relationships within wider business lines.
路Participating in professional associations, working groups, or industry forums, and contributing to thought leadership and the advancement of the profession.

What they are looking for:

路A strong consultancy background, with proven experience of delivering highway design projects within the City of London and Westminster, with familiarity of local authority standards, urban constraints, and stakeholder coordination.
路Experience in Section 278/38 Highway approval submissions.
路Experience in public realm design, including streetscape enhancements and integration of urban design principles.
路Strong knowledge of highway design standards and software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D), and familiarity with BIM processes and 3D modelling tools.
路Proven ability to lead teams and deliver projects on time and within budget.
路Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
路Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
路Chartered Engineer status (CEng or equivalent) is highly desirable.
