Irwin and Colton are delighted to be partnering exclusively with Dulwich College, one of the UK's leading private day and boarding schools, to identify their new full-time, Health and Safety Manager. The College occupies a large and beautiful 70-acre site adjacent to the South Circular with some 1900 pupils, over 600 staff and more than 40 buildings.
Reporting to the COO, this role will lead the development and monitoring of all health and safety activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, staff, and visitors within the school and the many facilities within the estate. Key to the role will be empowering departments to take ownership of their health and safety responsibilities, whilst ensuring compliance with legislation and best practices. Acting as a coach and mentor, the role will be expected to provide specialist guidance on complex safety matters.
Responsibilities of the Health and Safety Manager role will include:
H&S Expertise
Serve as the primary point of contact for health and safety matters, offering expert advice across departments
Promote a positive, proactive approach to health and safety, inspiring staff to embrace their responsibilities
Work with Managers and Leaders to develop and implement an approach to H&S in their area of responsibility that is pragmatic, compliant and sustainable
Deliver engaging, practical health and safety training tailored to departmental needs
Collaborate with external health and safety consultants to maintain a robust and consistent approach
Policies and Processes
Oversee the development, implementation, and periodic review of health and safety policies and procedures
Ensure the College's health and safety framework aligns with current legislation and best practices
Provide guidance and support to ensure compliance with risk management processes
Assessments, Inspections and Investigations
Review, monitor, and ensure departmental risk assessments are suitable, sufficient, and actionable
Develop and implement specialist risk assessments and safe systems of work when necessary
Conduct regular health and safety inspections and audits across the campus, identifying risks and recommending improvements
Ensure timely completion of follow-up actions arising from audits and inspections
Lead and support incident investigations to determine root causes and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively
The successful Health and Safety Manager will have:
Strong communication and collaboration skills, and experience in collaborating with Managers and Leaders
NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent (Diploma desirable)
Experience in reviewing and monitoring risk assessments to ensure compliance
Competence in conducting audits, inspections, and incident investigations
Strong understanding of fire safety regulations and compliance
Experience in educational or multi-departmental environments (Desirable)
Familiarity with behaviour-based safety approaches
Analytical skills to interpret data, identify trends, and measure the effectiveness of initiatives.
