Head of Fan Strategy

Location: Hybrid (London based with flexibility for remote work)

Salary: £160 - £200 per day (Depending on experience)

Job Type: Freelance Contract, Part Time, 3 days per week

Our client is a small, recently founded independent record label based in London, dedicated to helping emerging artists build loyal fanbases and sustainable careers in the music industry. They provide a unique combination of studio, label, and management services, working closely with their artists to develop their creative vision and connect with audiences.

Their team includes music professionals with backgrounds in production, branding, touring, and digital marketing. They’re passionate about building meaningful careers for artists through genuine artist-fan relationships and strategic development across both digital and real-world spaces.

The Role

They are looking for a Head of Fan Strategy to take the lead in growing and nurturing the fanbases of their artists—both online and in person. This role is at the heart of their artist development strategy, ensuring that artists don’t just reach new audiences, but also convert casual listeners into dedicated, long-term fans.

You’ll work closely with their artists and wider team to:

  • Expand audiences via creative marketing, live events, and online discovery.
  • Engage and retain fans using community-building strategies, direct-to-fan initiatives, and meaningful two-way communication.
  • Build and manage fan data systems (CRM, mailing lists, fan clubs, etc.) that make growth measurable and repeatable.
  • Develop fan monetization opportunities such as exclusive content, merch, live events, and digital offerings.
  • Create repeatable systems that improve how the company engages with fanbases, helping to make operations more scalable and effective.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with artists to ensure fanbase growth and engagement plans are delivered.
  • Helping design and execute bespoke campaigns such as competitions and exclusive drops.
  • Capturing and analysing fan engagement metrics, and reporting learnings back to the team.
  • Co-developing company-wide systems for measuring and enhancing artist-fan relationships.
  • Collaborating with a digital ads specialist to deliver effective, informed campaigns.
  • Creating artist-facing reports after each release and helping systematise their delivery.
  • Contributing ideas to team discussions on fan development and audience strategy.
    • Testing and iterating real-world fan capture methods (e.g. at gigs, live activations, busking).

This is a role for someone who is entrepreneurial, creative, and strategic—ready to help shape the direction of fan engagement at a growing label, and excited to shape and grow their own role through their activities.

The right candidate will be one who is excited to shape and grow this role, loves a challenge, thrives in the freedom and hands-on nature of a small team working environment, and is deeply passionate about the independent and DIY music scene.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Strong interest and knowledge in early-stage music marketing and audience development
  • Strong interest and knowledge in guerilla marketing tactics
  • Experience working directly with music artists or within the independent/DIY music space
  • Experience in developing and executing fan engagement campaigns across digital and real-world contexts
  • Entrepreneurial attitude with a proactive, solutions-focused approach
  • Excellent time and project management skills, with demonstrable experience taking projects from ideation to execution to impact evaluation
  • Ability to work independently with limited oversight
  • Familiarity with digital marketing platforms and social media strategy
  • Ability to interpret campaign data and engagement metrics

Desirable:

  • Hands-on experience with CRM systems, direct-to-fan tools and music monetisation tools (e.g. Mailchimp, Substack, Patreon, Bandcamp, Shopify)
  • A working knowledge of DSPs (Spotify for Artists, YouTube Studio, etc.) and their marketing tools
  • Experience creating or coordinating online content strategies
  • An understanding of the current digital music landscape and how core fans are cultivated
  • Experience helping artists translate real-world activities (gigs, busking, in-person events) into online fan engagement
  • Experience in small organisations, start-ups or entrepreneurial work settings
  • Some understanding of how artist brands and fan strategies connect

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours
  • Coaching opportunities for professional development
  • Access to artist gigs
  • Opportunities to attend biannual artist retreats
