Senior DevOps Engineer to work with a ministerial government department. This is an initial 9 month contract, paying up to 750 per day, inside IR35, remote working.

Active SC Clearance is required prior to commencing this assignment.

Summary:

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you'll be instrumental in shaping the infrastructure and delivery processes of complex, cloud-native services. You'll work hands-on with modern tooling particularly AWS, Terraform, Jenkins, and Ansible while also being a visible and proactive contributor in team discussions, architecture decisions, and stakeholder engagements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Own and lead the design, implementation, and optimisation of infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines across multiple AWS environments.
  • Work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to understand requirements, raise technical concerns, and help shape scalable cloud solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance, technical support, and promoting best practices in DevOps and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Drive continuous improvement in deployment processes, system reliability, observability, and incident response.
  • Proactively identify and resolve infrastructure or performance issues across environments (staging, production, etc.).
  • Ensure security, compliance, and data protection policies are embedded into infrastructure and automation workflows.
  • Monitor, support, and improve production systems, ensuring availability, scalability, and resilience.
  • Communicate clearly within stand-ups, sprint planning, and architectural review sessions - taking ownership of delivery, blockers, and priorities.
  • Write, maintain, and version infrastructure code using Terraform and Ansible, ensuring consistency and reusability through modular design.
  • Implement and manage alerting, logging, and monitoring across environments using CloudWatch, Dynatrace, Slack integrations, and more.

Skills and Experience Required:

AWS Tools / Services:

  • Amazon API Gateway (Creating and managing usage plans, Generating and assigning API keys, Handling permissions and troubleshooting access issues)
  • AWS Lambda (Event-driven execution (e.g., S3 triggers, CloudWatch alarms), Performance optimisation and cold start handling, IAM role and permission management)
  • Amazon S3 (Data storage and versioning, Bucket and prefix-level permissions, CLI operations (cp, api copy-object, etc.))
  • Amazon RDS (Postgres, MySQL) (Migration from on-premises databases, Managing schemas and connectivity, Ensuring high availability and backups)
  • Amazon OpenSearch Service (Cluster management and upgrades, Snapshot and restore strategies (native and S3-based), Cross-region redundancy, Analysing and planning for breaking changes
  • Amazon CloudWatch (Metrics, dashboards, and alarms, Slack and Lambda alerting)
  • AWS Backup (Continuous backup configuration, Restore strategies)
  • AWS IAM (Role-based access control, Fine-grained policy creation, Principle of least privilege best practices)

Infrastructure as Code and Automation:

  • Terraform (Managing AWS infrastructure, Creating reusable modules, Upgrading and maintaining state)
  • Ansible (Automating deployments and configurations)
  • Jenkins (CI/CD pipelines for build and deploy, Integrations (e.g., security scans, Slack notifications))

Desirable Skills and Experience

Security, Compliance, and Monitoring:

  • Dynatrace (Application and infrastructure monitoring, Synthetic checks and SLOs)
  • Slack Integrations (Operational alerts (e.g., from CloudWatch, CI/CD pipelines))

Data and Logging:

  • Kibana (Visualisation and dashboarding)

Networking:

  • VPC and Security Groups (Access controls for API Gateway, RDS, and OpenSearch, Private/public access patterns)
  • S3 Endpoints (Restricting access to buckets and prefixes via policies)

Cost and Resource Management:

  • AWS Resource Tagging (Enabling cost reporting and attribution, Aligning resources with FinOps practices)
  • AWS CLI (Updating resource tags)
