Phoenix Arch School is an over-subscribed community SEN school with a strong and supportive staff team. All 55 pupils attending the school have a diagnosis of ASD. Phoenix Arch School equips pupils with knowledge, skills and creativity by preparing them for the next phase of their education and for life-long learning.

In addition, our School aims to provide full speech and language assessment, diagnosis (where appropriate) and intervention strategies for children with communication difficulties as an integral part of their educational life.

We offer learning pathways to ensure pupils are able to access a curriculum and approach to learning that remains appropriate for the pupil’s needs.

We are delighted to advertise for a Deputy Head Teacher at Phoenix Arch School; this role presents an exciting opportunity to build and lead an innovative learning provision.

The Post:

The Deputy Head Teacher at Phoenix Arch School plays a major role in supporting the Head Teacher with the day-to-day management of the school as well as taking a lead role in the strategic direction of the school. The Deputy Head Teacher will be required to deputise and assume full responsibility for the school in the absence of the Headteacher. As a member of the leadership team, the Deputy Head Teacher will play a major role in formulating the culture, vision, aims and objectives of the school, establishing the policies through which they shall be achieved, managing staff and resources to achieve the aims and objectives and monitor and evaluate progress towards their achievement.

We are looking for an outstanding practitioner and leader who has:

  • Commitment to the promotion of high standards in teaching and learning
  • Good understanding of autism and neurodivergence including identifying strengths as well as challenges
  • Excellent understanding of National Curriculum subject knowledge (KS1 and KS2), and how to adapt it for SEN
  • Proven track record of leading curriculum and assessment
  • Knowledge and understanding of statutory assessment arrangements at KS1 and KS2
  • An understanding of different learning pathways and learning styles.
  • Senior leadership experience at a mainstream or special primary school, and proven ability to lead and inspire
  • Evidence of further professional study, e.g. NPQSL, and good leadership skills
  • Commitment to high aspirations for all - staff and students
  • Roles and Responsibilities:

    In addition to the professional duties as given in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document, the Deputy Headteacher will have the following specific roles and responsibilities:

  • To be non-class based but teach some classes to provide non-contact time to the class teachers.
  • To lead on curriculum- teaching and learning throughout the school.
  • To lead a system and culture of continual improvement and high standards in teaching through team-teaching, leading insets and demonstrating excellence
  • To lead on all matters pertaining to statutory assessment and testing along with the head teacher.
  • To lead on internal assessment and tracking systems.
  • To take a major role in monitoring and evaluating school provision related to raising progress, standards and achievement.
  • To take a leading role in the pastoral care of all children including behaviour management and safeguarding.
  • Recruiting and inducting staff along with the headteacher
  • Leading assemblies, staff briefings and staff meetings
  • Further enhance Personal Development opportunities for our pupils and CPD for staff
  • Work as part of a team with SENCO, Speech and language and Occupation Therapists
  • To attend pupil Annual reviews meeting with parents
  • To support the Headteacher in the day-to-day management of the school by taking specific responsibility for daily absence of staff and cover including PPA time.
