SEN Teaching Assistant - Trauma-Informed - Muswell Hill - Primary School

A highly reputable Primary School in Muswell Hill, North London, is seeking an exceptional SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team immediately. The school's SENCO has made it clear that this SEN Teaching Assistant role requires someone with extensive training, proven behaviour-management expertise, and a deep understanding of trauma-informed practice.

This is not an entry-level role. The children present significant behavioural challenges, often with complex emotional needs, dysregulation, and unpredictable responses. The successful SEN Teaching Assistant must be confident, experienced, and capable of maintaining a safe, structured, and nurturing environment at all times.

The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with skilled staff, external professionals, and demanding parents who expect consistency and expertise. You must be able to communicate professionally, de-escalate behaviour safely, and implement strategies based on trauma-informed language, attachment awareness, and positive behaviour interventions.



As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you must be able to:

  • Apply trauma-informed and attachment-aware approaches at all times

  • De-escalate challenging behaviour using safe and proven strategies

  • Work 1:1 with children who present high levels of behavioural need

  • Maintain calm, structure and routine in moments of dysregulation

  • Communicate professionally with staff and parents

  • Build trust while maintaining firm, consistent boundaries



You MUST have:

  • Extensive SEN experience in primary settings

  • Strong behaviour management training (Team Teach or equivalent preferred)

  • Experience supporting children with emotional trauma and high behavioural needs

  • The confidence to work with demanding parents

  • The resilience and professionalism required for a highly challenging role

This long-term SEN Teaching Assistant position offers excellent support from a knowledgeable SENCO and senior leadership team, but only experienced practitioners will be shortlisted.
