MANAGING EDITOR, HYPHEN

THE ROLE

Hyphen (hyphenonline.com) is a growing news organisation that covers stories relevant to Muslims in the UK and Europe. The managing editor will help our ambitious journalism make a greater impact. This is both a strategic and hands-on role with a primary focus on helping us expand our publishing and social media activity across all channels.

You’ll need a well-rounded understanding of the interests and aspirations of Muslim communities in the UK and Europe, including news, culture, lifestyle and opinion.

You will manage Hyphen’s day-to-day publishing operation, working with editors to ensure our content spreadsheets are kept up to date and our weekday schedule is well stocked with stories and features.

You will also work with our social media team across our various platforms, ensuring posts are on brand, optimised and of the highest quality. You’ll create this content in partnership with our social and multimedia producers.

Among other responsibilities, the managing editor will help recruit and manage editorial staff, manage the editorial budget, regularly review editorial and organisational policies and operating procedures, work with senior staff and lawyers to help manage legal risk and ensure compliance, and assess requirements for training and development. You will also monitor industry trends, including innovations in digital storytelling, and help ensure corporate and editorial best practice.

We’re looking for an experienced team player with excellent organisational skills and enthusiasm for Hyphen’s brand of storytelling.

Experience required:

  • Managing website and social media publishing workflows
  • Good understanding of how to use audience analytics, rich media, newsletters and other elements to maximise interaction and engagement with Hyphen’s output
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good administrative and organisational skills

This role could suit you if you:

  • have 5+ years of experience running a newsroom
  • have managed a small team
  • can run a production schedule and ensure deadlines are met
  • enjoy staying updated on media trends, best practice and new tech and software
  • are comfortable being the last set of eyes on a story, raising questions about revisions required and the person who hits publish
  • know your way around the major social media platforms and keep up with their changes
  • are a steady and exacting editor
