We're looking for an experienced Publishing Editor to join a leading purpose-driven, research publisher committed to advancing research and education. In this role, you’ll collaborate with editors, societies, and internal teams to develop and grow a diverse portfolio of hybrid and OA journals across the social sciences and STEM fields.

 

Key responsibilities  

 

  • Oversee journal editor performance, supporting best practices in manuscript submission, peer review, revision processes, and editorial board management. Recruit or replace editors as needed.
  • Monitor financial performance of assigned journals, identifying and implementing actions to support revenue and cost management in collaboration with other teams and external partners.
  • Provide advice and resources to editors and society partners to support quality content development. Use relevant data and metrics to inform journal development strategies.
  • Lead contract negotiations with editors and societies, including drafting, reviewing, and finalising agreements in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Organise and lead editorial board meetings and represent the publisher at relevant academic and industry events.
  • Work across departments to ensure effective journal production, marketing, and distribution within agreed timelines and budgets.
  • Manage the onboarding of newly acquired titles, coordinating activities from contract through to publication.
  • Support wider team projects and contribute to departmental goals as required.  

 

Skills/experience  

 

  • Knowledge of and interest in academic publishing and higher education.
  • Experience in journal management, ideally within academic or scientific publishing.
  • Understanding of the journal publishing process, including peer review and editorial workflows.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present and share information clearly in writing and in person.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Organised and able to manage multiple projects to deadline in a fast-paced environment.
  • Awareness of ethical and legal considerations in academic publishing, such as publication misconduct, libel, or copyright.
  • Competent user of standard IT tools, including Microsoft Office.  

 

A competitive salary range of £48,530 - £50,093 is offered, plus bonus, and benefits package.
