FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Senior Data Scientist to work for our client within the energy sector. This is initially a 6-month contract with the potential to extend and will be a hybrid role based in London.

Our client is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join their Fundamentals Modelling & Innovation (FM&I) team, who are committed to developing cutting-edge fundamentals models and analytical tools that drive smarter, faster, and more holistic commercial decisions across their trading and supply (T&S) business. You will be part of a dynamic, cross-disciplinary squad that works directly with traders, market strategists, and commercial partners to deliver actionable insights, improve modelling processes, and influence strategy in global energy markets.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver robust, commercially relevant modelling and analysis to unlock insights across low-carbon, power, gas, and oil markets
  • Develop and maintain fundamental balance and pricing models, leveraging advanced statistical techniques and industry best practices
  • Engage closely with traders, analysts, and market strategists to translate complex data into actionable insights that drive trading performance
  • Identify and automate repetitive processes, creating scalable, reusable modules across analytics projects
  • Monitor developments in internal statistical techniques and external market dynamics, embedding innovation and continuous improvement into all solutions
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, sharing knowledge and building capability across the trading analytics community
  • Present analysis and recommendations to stakeholders, influencing high-impact commercial decisions

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in data science, ideally within a commercial or trading environment
  • Proficiency in time series analysis, regression modelling, and forecasting techniques
  • Strong experience with Python and core libraries for data science (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, statsmodels)
  • Ability to manipulate and analyse large, complex datasets with attention to detail
  • Clear, confident communicator who can explain analytics and influence commercial decisions
  • Experience using visualisation tools like Power BI or Plotly Dash
  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-stakes trading environment

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of global energy markets and trading operations
  • Understanding of supply and demand fundamentals and their impact on physical and financial instruments
  • Experience building models in collaboration with traders or commercial stakeholders
  • Exposure to data engineering practices and data science platforms (e.g., Dataiku)
  • Familiarity with SQL and developing robust data pipelines
  • Experience working in Agile squads or cross-functional teams
