Our client, a prominent player in the power distribution sector, is seeking a dynamic Primary Design Engineer with expertise in substation engineering to join their permanent team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to crucial infrastructure projects that support green investments and new technologies across the UK electricity market.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations.
  • Prepare technical specifications for electrical plant and provide associated electrical designs for substation upgrades and new substation projects from 11kV up to 132kV.
  • Produce substation design feasibility reports, cost estimates, layouts, GAs, and plant specifications, including transformers, switchgear, and battery systems.
  • Review designs produced by suppliers and clients to ensure technical compliance with legislation and policies.
  • Ensure designs are delivered according to the contract, client satisfaction, and specifications.
  • Undertake the role of CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for developed HV and EHV projects.
  • Identify and manage health and safety risks and hazards.
  • Attend site meetings to support design or requirement changes during project build.
  • Ensure project design works are aligned with programme, quality, and margin.
  • Develop and maintain external and internal client relationships.


Job Requirements:

  • Experience in substation engineering at 33kV, 132kV, and 11kV levels.
  • Exposure to substation cable design and protection and control.
  • Experience with HV and EHV plant specification and design, from 11kV up to 132kV, as well as load calculations and rating studies.
  • Proven experience in HV and EHV substation design (both AIS & GIS).
  • Knowledge of engineering standards and technical policies for HV and EHV plants, including substations, earthing, and electrical clearances.
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation related to the design of electrical substations.
  • Design cost estimation experience.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements and capability to fulfil CDM 'Designer' and 'Principal Designer' roles.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for project requirements.
